Bet Me

Well, I first and foremost think that this novel is fantastic! I love how witty that Cruise has the characters made out to be. Also, I love how she portrays Mel and Cal. Mel appears to be completely boring, and plain - because she didn't really care too much about how she looked. Though she sort of did, because of her mother always calling her Fat, and telling her to wear more black to appear more slim. Which, in any case, is wrong. Especially to call your own daughter fat. Mel though, doesn't take any crap from anybody in any case. She is witty, has a great sense of humor, and is a kind heartfelt woman. Calvin, whether or not he likes it (which he DOES!), is attracted to her. He finds her sexy and beautiful just the way she is.

A big connection in this novel is food. Mel deprives herself of food she likes, and she doesn't allow her self many varieties. When Cal comes along, she feels a sense of self acceptance and starts to eat food she wasn't "allowed" to eat before. One dish she finds absolutely fantastic is Emilios Chicken Marsala. Food connects Mel and Cal because one the very first bet, they went to Emilios. Cal sees how amazing she looks when shes enjoying something, rather then whining or complaining or yelling about something - mainly at him - and he continues to see her ( a lot is controlled by bets, but still.).

This book is sensual, sexy, and an all around enjoyable read. I think this is my favorite book thus far, for class.
