Wuthering Heights is a Great Place to Start

I always thought that the Twilight Saga was Wuthering Heights meets Romeo and Juliet. I have thought that since the first time I read the series, Stephenie Meyer took some of her inspiration for the novel Wuthering Heights which is one of my all time favorite love stories so it's not hard to fall in love with the Twilight series for me it was just a newer version which adds a different twist to Wuthering Heights. The two stories I could read over and over again and fall in love with the characters time and time again. Each time I read them I pick up on new things that expand on the depth of the novels every time I read them.

I also believe that you can find a lot of Heathcliff in Edward Cullen. Edward Cullen, Bella Swan’s soul mate, Heathcliff is really the man Catherine Earnshaw should have married he is her soul mate. Edward and Heathcliff have similar characteristics such as they both seem like Mister wrong, that dark, mysterious guy that never seems to show emotion and is a somewhat hardened by his life experiences. He is strong, wild and would do anything for his love Catherine.

Which also brings to my attention the novel series the Vampire Diaries or the television show whatever you may be familiar with; that too could be taken as a modern day play at Wuthering Heights. You have two brothers Damien and Stefan who each at different times throughout the novel take a lead from Heathcliff, and Elena who is the Catherine Earnshaw/Bella Swan of the series. In the beginning of the series Damien is the one who is almost a chip off the old block of Heathcliff vengeful, hard and only carrying for himself and who he believes is his true love ironically enough her name is Catherine also, he later finds out that she does not love him but his brother Catherine took that from the Catherine of Wuthering Heights.

I believe you can find traces of all the main characters from Wuthering Heights, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff and Edgar Linton in characters from both books series. I feel that the story of Wuthering Heights is what paved the way for the modern romance novel which today most happen to be about the supernatural. The fact that Wuthering Heights is not the fluffy sugar coated loves story makes it great and that is why the darker love story has been able to progress, Wuthering Heights in a way is closer to real life that most in the fact that love is not easy and you have to work for it to obtain it and keep it.

  1. It was interesting to read your comparisons of the characters from Wuthering Heights, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. This wasn't something that I had actually thought of but seeing the comparisons of something that was first published about 164 years ago to something that is more recent are an interesting perspective in understanding the characters.
