love is complicated!

There were many issues brought up in our class discussion today. The issue regarding the maturity of the characters was one. I think that Edgar Linton and Isabella Heathcliff are definitely the most mature. The reason for this is probably because their up bringing was most normal. I think Edgar really loved Catherine. He was there for her everyday when she was sick, and was still suffering from his loss of her after her death. After Catherine's death, Edgar showed much love for their daughter Cathy which is what a normal father would most likely do. Catherine obviously married Edgar for security and social class, but I truly think that Catherine had some love for Edgar, just not the true love that she had for Heathcliff. Heathcliff had the worst luck in his life. I think Healthcliff being full of hate and wanting revenge definitely reflects from how he was treated, mostly by Hindley. Hindley really made the path for Heathcliff's future when he degraded him to nothing but a servant, which influenced Catherine's decision not to marry him. For Catherine to blame Heathcliff for her illness and eventually her death was not right because it was ultimately Catherine's decision not to marry Heathcliff. For social class to be a barrier between love and marriage is not really a good enough reason for me to turn my back on someone I love, but obviously it was back then. I still don' t feel sorry for Catherine because in "Pride and Prejudice", social class wasn't a good enough reason for Mr. Darcy's to turn his back on love.

  1. I agree with you on a lot of the things you said in this blog. What I noticed throughout the book, especially in the section we read for today, is that when the characters get sick, the blame is put on someone else. Heathcliff went to Cathy telling her his son is very sick since she stopped writing him, Catherine blamed her sickness on Heathcliff. Sounds like being "love sick" can cause an actually illness.

  2. I completely feel the same way when it comes to love. The people's status and power level should have nothing to do with a relationship. Love is a totally seperate. I feel there should be no connection between status and love. That would be like saying cheese and shoe laces are connected. It simply just doesn't matter.

  3. Yeah I agree! Everyone in this book seems to blame someone for something that's happened to them. It can NEVER be their fault, heaven forbid. Love is complicated. I do agree that Isabella and Edgar are the most mature. Their status shouldn't matter when it comes to love. You love who you love, end of story!

  4. I agree with what you said however...just to play Devil's Advocate- Mr. Darcy was a man and marrying below his status wasn't as large of an issue as a woman (in this case, Catherine) marrying below hers. It doesn't make sense to us but it was the times they lived in- in many parts of the world things still happen.
