Heathcliff and Patriarchy

After discussing a little bit about patriarchy in class this week, a character that both follows these values and goes against them is Heathcliff. One way that we see how Heathcliff is a follower of patriarchy is that he likes to have a say in the things that happen around him. He is a very strong and willful character, which entails the four values of patriarchy.

However, Heathcliff is a good example for following the values, he is also a great example for not following the values. As discussed in last weeks class Heathcliff is also the byronic character. He does not really follow the societies norm and everyone else. He does not always want the attention as some men do. He chooses to be kind of isolated and would rather have no other power. He really is not trying to change the system in any way, he does what he wants and is satisfied by what he does.

  1. I definitely agree that Heathcliff is both a patriarch and not a patriarch. I would say that he definitely wants control of both houses in that area, but the reason he wants them - for revenge - isn't really a patriarchal idea.... I think the biggest thing about Heathcliff is that he really doesn't CARE what society thinks. He doesn't care if he's following society or not. Like you said, he just does what he wants.
