However, Heathcliff is a good example for following the values, he is also a great example for not following the values. As discussed in last weeks class Heathcliff is also the byronic character. He does not really follow the societies norm and everyone else. He does not always want the attention as some men do. He chooses to be kind of isolated and would rather have no other power. He really is not trying to change the system in any way, he does what he wants and is satisfied by what he does.
I definitely agree that Heathcliff is both a patriarch and not a patriarch. I would say that he definitely wants control of both houses in that area, but the reason he wants them - for revenge - isn't really a patriarchal idea.... I think the biggest thing about Heathcliff is that he really doesn't CARE what society thinks. He doesn't care if he's following society or not. Like you said, he just does what he wants.
